Lexar memory cards

CES 2010 - Lexar Media announced additions to the Professional line of CompactFlash (CF) and Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards for an enhanced imaging experience. Lexar has increased the capacity of Professional 300x CF cards to 32GB, and Professional 233x CF cards are now available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. In addition, the Lexar Professional 133x SDHC card has achieved a Class 10 speed rating. The improvements to the Lexar Professional flash memory line allow professional photographers and advanced enthusiasts to capture more high-resolution images and high-definition (HD) video with their digital SLR cameras.

Seagate unveils the Black Armor PS110 USB 3.0 portable external hard drive performance kit for netbooks. Demonstrating its industry leadership in delivering advanced and easy-to-use storage solutions, this all-in-one USB 3.0 toolkit packages a 500GB 7200RPM 2.5 inch hard drive, power cable and PC express card, to deliver speeds up to three times faster than its USB 2.0 predecessor, making it one of the fastest portable hard drives available. “As we continue to amass vast libraries of HD photos, movies, & music, the storage needs of households are forecast to grow more than ten times between 2009 & 2013, and the average storage requirements will exceed a terabyte by 2013”, said Kurt Schreff, analyst of Parks Associates.

SDXC memory cards

Panasonic announces the availability of the company's first 64 GB and 48 GB SDXC memory cards. SDXC is the next generation SD memory card, a new standard for storing data more than 32 GB and up to 2 terabytes. The new Panasonic SDXC memory cards, the RP-SDW64GE1K (64 GB) and RP-SDW48GE1K (48 GB) are Panasonic's largest-sized GOLD cards with Class 10 speed specification. Featuring new advanced Super Intelligent Controller helps to improve the reliability of the card and extend its lifetime. The new 64 GB and 48 GB SDXC memory cards will be globally introduced in February 2010 with suggested retail prices of $599.95 and $449.95, respectively.

100GB CompactFlash card from Pretec

Pretec, known to always be around at every consumer electronics show, brought a collection of obscure memory cards along, among which is a 100GB CompactFlash type II memory card. It so happened that I use a Nikon D3x digital SLR during photographing at the PMA 2009 in Las Vegas, and I was very curious to see if this 100GB CF working sample would function well in Nikon's flagship. Formatting was not the problem; however, the Nikon D3x camera doesn't like it at all. On its display, everything that is not supposed to blink, is blinking and I decide that this card will have to go without the D3x.

Lately, the resolution of digital SLR cameras has increased considerably with 24 megapixels. This has a direct effect on the file size of the pictures. In addition, the integration of video availability in the DSLR camera generates more data to store on a memory card than just pictures. The storage capacity of a flash memory card has significantly increased with 64GB; in addition, the development of the SDXC card will provide us with sufficient storage capacity. The roadmap shows a 2TB SXDC card. Besides flash memory, the hard disk continues to play a big role in the digital workflow. The PMA 2011 show provides an overview of various hard disk solutions with several unique solutions. Flash memory continues to innovate, and will thus have an even more important role in our work environment.
