Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Nikon always attract the attention; same thing happened at the PMA 2007 show in Las Vegas. Events like the Photo Marketing Association are excellent occasions for Nikon to show the consumer everything they have to offer. And it still impresses to witness the amount of lenses, equipment and other accessories available for Nikon's digital SLR and compact cameras. Whether it concerns standard photography or professional photography; Nikon offer the solution. Although many of us thought it was about time for Nikon to announce a new professional SLR camera; during the PMA 2007 emphasis had been placed on the Nikon Coolpix compact camera and a new digital SLR for the entry-level consumer.

The Olympus booth once again showed that Olympus impress with their FourThirds system. The amount of lenses for this system has increased extremely speedy and now offers a wide range for both the amateur and professional photographer. We have noticed that Olympus is quite capable of offering the consumers what they want concerning the low and middle segment but we are still waiting for a real professional SLR camera. Olympus keep us in suspense and even after showing an advanced prototype digital SLR camera one can only guess for its real specifications. Still; it seems Olympus are well on their way. Behind glass we spot the prototype of the advanced SLR that doesn't seem to need any alterations on the body.

SanDisk at PMA 2007

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

It seemed somewhat unusual to find out that SanDisk did not use the PMA 2007 for massive introduction of new or upgraded products. Only small announcements were made, like the introduction of the SanDisk 8GB Ultra II SDHC memory card and an enhancement of the Extreme III assortment, but that was all. The flash memory market is going through incredibly vigorous times. Prices have been dropping as they never have before and even the smallest providers went along in this flow; more or less forced by the competition. Most providers know they can't keep up for long. SanDisk announced even before the PMA in Las Vegas started that they will take their precautions to be able to get along.

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

For Sigma, the latest Photokina has been an important event. Not only for them being a lens manufacturer but also a camera manufacturer. At that time Sigma introduced the Sigma SD14, a digital SLR camera based on the deviated Foveon X3 image sensor. Besides that Sigma introduced the DP1 digital compact camera that has been equipped with the Foveon image sensor. Not one of these cameras had reached the final stage then and the availability of the Sigma SD14 was even postponed. But at the PMA 2007 Sigma announced the availability of the Sigma SD14 digital SLR and the first results are starting to appear here and there on a users forum and on different web sites of the true Sigma lovers.

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Besides a large amount of digital compact cameras, among them the new Sony Cybershot DSC-W200, one of the world's first 12 Megapixel digital cameras, a twosome Alpha concept digital SLR cameras has been showcased together with some eight new lenses. Not a word about technical specifications, expectations, availability or what's so ever; only a sign to show that there is still life after the Sony Alpha 100. The aforementioned concept models had been displayed in a glass showcase and at first sight it looks like we are dealing with a semi- and a professional digital SLR camera model. The latest inside news tells us that at least one of them will get introduced this year.

The current global economic situation also influences the participants of the 2010 PMA International Convention and Trade Show. Renowned companies are undergoing major reorganizations, affecting mainly at local level, where major changes are made. When it comes to digital imaging, the world is roughly divided into three parts, America, Europe and Asia. It seems that the manufacturers have decided among themselves that the PMA is specifically focused on the U.S.A. market, including the associated market strategies, while Europe is served by IFA and Photokina. In Asia, it is the Photo Imaging Expo in Tokyo that seems to focus on Japan and surrounding countries. The PMA show is expected to offer a different twist; keep tracking us for the latest show news.
