Pentax 645 Digital

Posted by: Mark Peters Saturday 7th, March 2009

According to a publication in the popular UK magazine Amateur Photographer, Pentax will appear at the next show in Japan with its digital medium format camera. A few years ago, Pentax announced the development of a digital medium format camera, and the model even received a name: Pentax 645 Digital. After that, however, the plan was stored on a shelf and seemed doomed to stay there. In an interview with John Carlson, product marketing and support manager of Pentax USA, Amateur Photographer was told that Pentax foresees possibilities on the Japanese market for this product. The upcoming Photo Imaging Expo, starting at the end of March in Tokyo, will be used to present the Pentax 645 Digital again.

100GB CompactFlash card from Pretec

Posted by: Dennis Hissink Saturday 7th, March 2009

Pretec, known to always be around at every consumer electronics show, brought a collection of obscure memory cards along, among which is a 100GB CompactFlash type II memory card. It so happened that I use a Nikon D3x digital SLR during photographing at the PMA 2009 in Las Vegas, and I was very curious to see if this 100GB CF working sample would function well in Nikon's flagship. Formatting was not the problem; however, the Nikon D3x camera doesn't like it at all. On its display, everything that is not supposed to blink, is blinking and I decide that this card will have to go without the D3x.

Hoodman digital camera accessories

Posted by: Ilse Jurrien Saturday 7th, March 2009

Hoodman once again brought some very handy accessories to the PMA show. With their striking yellow/black booth, Hoodman always attracts the attention. Hoodman knows how to convince the photographer of the use of certain accessories like the so-called 'Hoodloupe Professional'. This magnifier has to be placed on the back of the LCD monitor of the digital SLR, so that you can check the sharpness of a picture very precisely in addition to optimum reproduction. The new Hoodloupe Professional comes in a size up to 3 inches. Even more convenient is the possibility to wear the Loupe around your neck so you can quickly check a picture without having to attach the loupe to the display all the time.

Delkin SLR cleaning set

Posted by: Dennis Hissink Saturday 7th, March 2009

We also spotted Delkin's Sensor-scope system at the PMA 2009. The cleaning set for DSLR image sensors, awarded with various Awards, has been enhanced since the last Photokina 2008, with support for three sizes of sensors: 24mm, 20mm, and 16mm sensors. I must admit I have not tried out the set personally, but colleagues that have are all very enthusiast about this (rather pricey) cleaning system. I fear the Sensorscope system will not remain a sales hit much longer, since gradually more and more digital SLR cameras are appearing on the market with a built-in anti-dust system. An expensive solution such as offered by Delkin will become unnecessary.

Crumpler camera bags

Posted by: Mark Peters Saturday 7th, March 2009

Crumpler, the well-known bag manufacturer, presented its line of camera bags in its very own way, as we should be used to by now. I made the effort to try and read some press releases on the Crumpler website, however; after 10 minutes I stopped searching. The navigation and trendy media communication drove me mad. I gave up, thinking that I too have finally fallen victim to the generation gap. Coming back to Crumpler's presentation of its camera bags line at the PMA 2009; some kind of paper castle hid the wide array of colorful bags, some of which were filled with rolls of toilet paper (?!). As I said; I don't seem to get the point, however; Crumpler considers its clientele smart enough to know that a Crumpler bag is actually meant to store a camera…

Neither water nor sand or hand covered in suntan lotion at the beach will now endanger the life of your personal cell phone. The legendary Zeiss Distagon T* 2,8/21 is now being introduced for SLR cameras with EF, F and K bayonets. Thanks to its excellent performance, this modernized version from the former Contax system sets new standards in this focal length class. "Even at full aperture, the floating element design ensures optimum edge-to-edge image quality over the entire focusing range. The PMA, or Photo Marketing Association, continues a long tradition of maintaining a network of photo imaging as well as the experience and know-how of the industry. The PMA represents 20,000 members from over 100 countries, who are all active within the imaging industry. As a reflection of the changes in the market, the PMA organization has also changed and has become more diverse. Nowadays, the member group consists of representatives coming from photo retail, manufacturers, commercial photo labs, professional sports and news photography, in addition to small album print suppliers and photo processing centers. The PMA 2010 focuses on an industry which is heavily affected by the unstable situation of the global financial economy. However, whether the latter will also stand in the way of the innovation and product introductions, remains to be revealed by the PMA International Convention and Trade Show in the Anaheim Convention Center in Southern California, USA.
