Samsung NX digital camera

Posted by: Dennis Hissink Monday 9th, March 2009

As for the Samsung NX camera; it may have been introduced as a concept, but many things still remain unclear. There are no announcements whatsoever from Samsung about specifications that are not already in the press release, but as we look at the concept cameras showcased behind glass, we see features claimed like video capture. This makes us assume that the Samsung NX camera will be able to record videos. The DX format sensor that is going to be used in the future Samsung NX camera, is larger that that of the compact camera, which causes us to expect more from the image quality of this digital camera.

Digital Foci photo book

Posted by: Dennis Hissink Monday 9th, March 2009

Digital Foci had a small booth somewhere in the back of the hall of the PMA 2009. A new product, called the Photo Book was showcased. Digital Foci introduces this product as a digital photo album with a built-in 8 inch TFT LCD screen and 4 GB internal memory. You could also turn it around and say that the Digital Foci Photo Book is a digital photo frame with a leather-like wrapping. The built-in battery lasts for 2.5 hours. Pictures can be uploaded to the internal memory via a card slot or the USB drive. CompactFlash, Secure Digital, SDHC, Memory Stick, MultiMedia Card and USB drives are all supported. It’s a nice idea, however, personally I would rather carry a portable photo viewer or use the picture sharing option on my mobile phone.

Sigma DP2 test pictures from Las Vegas

Posted by: Ilse Jurrien Saturday 7th, March 2009

In addition to the many interviews, attending various lectures, and receiving the information about (upcoming) product introductions, I went out to take photos with several new digital cameras. One of which is the Sigma DP2 compact camera, and although not a final production model, we are already able to provide you with a number of test photos which were made in Las Vegas with the Sigma DP2. The Sigma DP2 digital camera was first mentioned during the Photokina 2008. At that time, the process of the development of the Sigma DP2 camera was announced. This time, however, during the PMA 2009, it has become clear that Sigma is ready to launch the Sigma DP2 and deliver the new camera to its distributors.

Sony Alpha lenses

Posted by: Mark Peters Saturday 7th, March 2009

During the PMA, Sony Japan announced several new lenses; that is to say, they have announced the developments. It strikes us that hardly any announcements, if even any at all, were made about the Sony Alpha system during PMA 2009. A large showcase received a prominent place, showcasing the available lenses for the Alpha. Among them, we find the new concept lenses, which were announced rather inconspicuously by Sony Japan during the past week. It is not even likely that these concept models will actually appear on the market as Sony lenses. It's more about showing the possibilities of the Alpha system.

Micro FourThirds system

Posted by: Dennis Hissink Saturday 7th, March 2009

During last year’s Photokina 2008 in Germany, the Micro FourThirds system was jointly introduced by Olympus and Panasonic. And although Panasonic pocketed the gain during the Photokina by introducing the Panasonic LUMIX G1 digital camera, Olympus was not forgotten, and curiosity about the plans of Olympus with this system stayed on. At the opening, Olympus showed a Micro FourThirds design concept to the international press, and afterwards to the public, with the announcement that this kind of concept belongs to the possibilities, but that it does not necessarily equal the end-product.

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D camera

Posted by: Ilse Jurrien Saturday 7th, March 2009

Fujifilm took a prototype of a 3D camera along to the PMA show 2009 in Las Vegas. In addition to a pair of concept 3D cameras we saw before at the Photokina 2008, a plastic bold; unfortunately with annoying reflection, held a new prototype 3D camera. Perhaps already a functioning model, since the LEDs of the camera were shown activated. The Fujifilm Real 3D imaging concept is a full system of a digital camera, printer and display, and is a very interesting branch of photography. However, even now, I can't imagine it becoming a product for the masses, but it certainly seems to become a nice accessory.

Digital picture frames

Posted by: Ilse Jurrien Saturday 7th, March 2009

Digital picture frames continue to try and conquer a larger market share, in order to become a standard accessory in homes world-wide. Various suppliers showcased their latest digital frames, with or without designer edge. All depends on your personal taste, of course, but I have seen some frames I'd certainly never want to have in my house. These digital picture frames often provide innovative functions. HP demonstrated the possibility to directly print the picture of the frame wirelessly with the accompanying remote control through one of HP's picture printers. We also noticed a striking amount of Bluetooth techniques and more multi-functionality of the frames.

EWA Marine underwater housings

Posted by: Mark Peters Saturday 7th, March 2009

In one of the smaller booths, EWA Marine 'pops up'. EWA Marine is a brand that provides (under)water sports solutions for the wide array of digital electronic equipment that is available nowadays. And what's better than capturing the fabulous underwater wildlife with a digital camera? EWA Marine provides many affordable solutions for any digital compact or DSLR camera you can think of, allowing you to explore the underwater world. New during PMA is an underwater housing for those who love snorkeling. Not every person is able to go for scuba diving or has the possibility to do it. Snorkeling is an entirely different thing.

The PMA, or Photo Marketing Association, continues a long tradition of maintaining a network of photo imaging as well as the experience and know-how of the industry. The PMA represents 20,000 members from over 100 countries, who are all active within the imaging industry. As a reflection of the changes in the market, the PMA organization has also changed and has become more diverse. Nowadays, the member group consists of representatives coming from photo retail, manufacturers, commercial photo labs, professional sports and news photography, in addition to small album print suppliers and photo processing centers. The PMA 2010 focuses on an industry which is heavily affected by the unstable situation of the global financial economy. However, whether the latter will also stand in the way of the innovation and product introductions, remains to be revealed by the PMA International Convention and Trade Show in the Anaheim Convention Center in Southern California, USA.
