Sanyo decreases production of digital cameras: Japan's Sanyo Electric Co. is set to lose its position as the world's top digital camera maker, with its fiscal 2004 output seen falling short of the current target figure by two million units, Jiji Press learned Wednesday. Sanyo is expected to lower its digital camera production projection for the year to March to 12 million units from the current estimate of 14 million units, a downward-revised target set in October, informed sources said. The company is now likely to fall behind Sony Corp. and Canon Inc. on the global output ranking.
Sanyo was the world's top digital camera maker in the last two years, producing six million units in fiscal 2002 and 11 million units in fiscal 2003. More than 90 pct of its cameras are supplied on an original equipment manufacturer basis to other companies, such as Olympus Corp. and Nikon Corp. , for sales under their own brands. In October, Sanyo reduced its production target to 14 million units from 18 million units in response to inventory build-ups at client companies.

That target will have to be reduced further following slow sales of digital cameras by client companies in the year-end shopping season, the sources said. Sanyo has informed its parts suppliers of plans to scale back its output, according to the sources. Digital camera shipments at Canon are seen reaching 14.7 million units in the year ended last month, beating the annual production target set by Sanyo in October. Sony expects to ship 14 million to 15 million units of digital cameras in the year to March.
