Digital Rights Management on SecureMMC : The MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) is demonstrating an application of SecureMMC in Digital Rights Management (DRM) at 3GSM World Congress 2005. The MultiMediaCard standard has attracted immense industry interest recently with the standard expanded to include the highest performing memory cards, MMCplus and MMCmobile Cards, hard disk drive interface specification, and security function protocols in SecureMMC Card. The association membership has doubled since 2003.
The Digital Rights Management demonstration, being conducted at the MMCA Booth D35 in the main Exhibition Hall 2, illustrates the role of secure removable media in DRM on mobile devices. It also shows how the SecureMMC Card v2.0 with security features rooted in smart card technology can complement the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) DRM specification v2.0 to offer the mobile industry the most robust DRM infrastructure for digital content distribution.

The demonstration shows the new SecureMMC Card v2.0 capabilities that complement OMA DRM v2.0:
- Backup and Restore: How a list of encrypted content on the mobile device and the Rights Objects related
to the encrypted content can be backed up and restored on a SecureMMC Card.
- Move: The ability to move the Rights Objects to the SecureMMC Card.
- Playback: How SecureMMC Card manages permission to playback the encrypted content.
The SecureMMC Specification v2.0 is the result of a joint effort by a committee within the MMCA, including such leaders in the semiconductor, security and mobile industry as Gemplus, Giesecke+Devrient, Infineon, Nokia, Renesas Technology, Samsung, ST Micro and Telecom Italia. End-users who want ease of use and portability of digital content to multiple playback devices, will benefit from the extension of the OMA DRM trust model to secure removable media such as SecureMMC v2.0.
Besides DRM, the security architecture of SecureMMC Specification v2.0 can enable other future security applications that benefit a wide variety of users including the mobile workforce (for sales, field maintenance); those doing mobile transaction (making payments, stock trades, banking); those downloading entertainment content; and individuals who demand secure emails, credit card codes, storage and backup.
According to Joong Chul Yoon, Co-Chairman of the MMCA SecureMMC Technical Sub-Committee, "The SecureMMC Card standard enables smart card security functions to be accessible on a removable memory card through the MMC interface protocol making possible applications such as Digital Rights Management, m-Commerce and Digital Identity."
MMCA Welcomes 200th Member: The ongoing acceptance of the MultiMediaCard standard has resulted in a rapid increase in MMCA membership with the number doubling since 2003, bringing the total to 200. The latest additions include Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, Intel, Konka, Oberthur Card Systems, Giesecke & Devrient, Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Matsushita, Marvell, Agere, Denali Software and BSQUARE Corporation.
