Sony Cybershot DSC P12 digital camera
Today Sony Europe has announced a new Limited Edition version of the also new DSC-P10. The DSC-P12 is the same camera, but this time in a dark blue color case. We have had the opportunity to get our hands on this limited version so we could go ahead with a hands-on article about the first 5 Megapixel DSC-P series cameras from Sony. The new DSC-P12 is equipped with 1/1.8"  Super HAD CCD with 5 million effective Megapixels and has a 3x optical zoom lens with a focal range of 7.9 - 23.7mm, equivalent to 38-114mm on a 35mm camera. The new DSC-P12 combines high resolution with a high level of user-friendliness. The DSC-P12 is a so called point-and-shoot camera but as the illustrated images shows the camera' s focal range can also be extended with a converter. By bringing on an adapter to the camera it is possible to use a converter to expand for example your tele range. This DSC-P12 is one of those new generation cameras that are compatible with the new Memory Stick Pro as well as the standard Memory Stick.

The DSC-P12 has almost the same stylish designed case as its predecessors the DSC-P7 and 9. The camera provides a high resolution of 5 Megapixels which will result in a high quality print. The high resolution also allows users to crop their images after recording without losing that much detail. A new function on the DSC-P12 is the Smart Zoom function which allows users to zoom without offering to much loss of quality. This function is a kind of intelligent zoom which will adjust zoom ratio according to the image resolution. The total range of Smart Zoom will give a 12x zoom.

An already well-known detail of almost any Sony video and camera product is their stamina. The camera is supplied with a new NP-FC11 battery that provides 1 hour and 30 minutes of power. Furthermore there are some new automatic adjustments made to provide the use even more easy-to-use functions than before. The DSC-P12 has now an exposure warning to give information about the status of exposure before taking a shot. Flash White balance will take care of perfect metered images when taking shots that contains a lot of reflective details such as water. To avoid colour distortion due to the detection of light sources around the subject the camera adjusts the white balance in the shot to maintain the rich colours with their true conditions. To make the judgement of the exposure easier the histogram function can give some help by showing a graph with the luminance distribution.

To improve action shots the new camera from Sony provides an automatic High Speed shutter in action mode. Together with the continuous auto focus it has to give a satisfied end result. Besides the ability to shoot a perfect image the new DSC-P12 can also handle movies with the MPEG MOVIE VX function. This function records video in real VGA quality which can easily be viewed on a television. In combination with the new 1GB Memory Stick Pro it is possible to record up to 44 minutes of video.
