D40x test images taken in Amsterdam

Posted by: Dennis Hissink Monday 2nd, April 2007

We just received a sample of the Nikon D40x SLR camera in combination with the new AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED lens. The new Nikon D40x and the lens were introduced just a few days before the PMA 2007 in Las Vegas opened. The Nikon D40x is the big brother in terms of resolution, ISO setting, energy consumption and continuous shooting speed, and is designed as a twin brother of the D40 DSLR camera. The lens is a great combination with the Nikon D40x camera. It focuses quite fast and of course the Vibration Reduction feature helps the photographer to prevent blurring while tele-shooting. Additional the D40x offers high ISO up to 3200 resulting into high shutter speeds.

Fuji Finepix s6500fd review

Posted by: Mark Peters Monday 2nd, April 2007

One thing became very clear with Fujifilm, at the Photokina 2006 : face detection is going to be it! And the technique is ready to be built in cameras standard. With this, Fujifilm can fall back on their extensive knowledge of minilabs. There, the technique has been used for years, among other things, to be able to tune colours perfectly. One of the first models with face detection is the Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd. The indication fd stands for face detection. The sensor is building another very important part of the Real Photo Technology. Fujifilm has been using the Super CCD for a long time, and the Fujifilm S6500fd has been equipped with the 6th generation already, the Super CCD VI HR.

PMA 2007 Final Report

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Although the major part of the new cameras has been introduced long before the PMA 2007 started, it is always a pleasure to attend the PMA. Besides visiting the booths, we centre on numerous conversations with new and existing contacts and at the same time it is a joy to annually meet our colleagues. The location of this year's PMA was Las Vegas and not Orlando, to the mere delight of most of us. It remains the ideal mixture: entertainment and photography. And Las Vegas is one of the most suitable places to offer such an event. According to the information I received we will be able to visit the PMA on this very same location for the next few years and Orlando is left out for a while.

Canon at PMA 2007

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

The Canon booth at the PMA 2007 Las Vegas is as always overwhelmingly large and outsized. The Canon digital imaging booth is overcrowded and people are fascinated by the large series of compact camera models and of course the new race-monster, the world's fastest digital SLR camera; the Canon EOS 1D Mark III. The year 2007 is a brilliant year for Canon. Not only because Canon has conquered and still holds an important market share but also because it is exactly seventy years ago that the first Canon camera was born. It was the Canon S and the first one in a long array of successful cameras. Also the step from analogue to digital was carried out incredibly fast and on a professional level.

Hewlett Packard at PMA 2007

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Naturally HP was also present at the PMA and in their huge booth, packed with new printing solutions, HP gave us an impression of their new assortment for the upcoming season. Many printing stations were being demonstrated, from compact printing kiosks that don't take up much room on a counter for example, to large printing kiosks for consumer self-service for ordering and printing digital images in no-time. During my visit at HP something weird had happened; after visiting the booth and chitchatting with my contacts I started photographing the booth and the displayed products. Something we are used to do for many years now and had been looked upon as the most common thing on earth, until recently.

HiTi at PMA 2007

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Printer manufacturer HiTi was also present at the PMA 2007 show in Las Vegas (Nevada). The HiTi booth was not that huge, but they did not bring fewer printers with them. Besides their current assortment of photo printers such as the DIMA 2006 winner Digital Photo Printer Shootout-winning S400; the HiTi 730PS printer and the new HiTi BS-iD400 photo printer had been showcased at the show. The new Hi-Touch BS-G400 is being forwarded by HiTi to participate in the contest for an Award in the DIMA 2007 Digital Photo Printer Shootout. The HiTi photo printer is equipped with a large size 2.5 inch LCD monitor enabling easy and fast operation without the need for a personal computer.

Kodak at PMA 2007

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Naturally Kodak couldn't fail to present themselves at this PMA 2007 show being a home player. The size of the Kodak booth at the Las Vegas convention centre was remarkably compact and therefore very well-organized. What used to surprise one in the old days, seems no longer the case and Kodak seem to have lost their former size as giant among the exhibitors. The digital compact cameras that had been introduced during the PMA were of course showcased on the docking stations that are nowadays looked upon as a standard. Striking is the new Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS digital camera with its inbuilt image stabilizer. Fortunately Kodak carries on with their trend of optical image stabilizers.

Nikon at PMA 2007

Posted by: Ralf Jurrien Tuesday 27th, March 2007

Nikon always attract the attention; same thing happened at the PMA 2007 show in Las Vegas. Events like the Photo Marketing Association are excellent occasions for Nikon to show the consumer everything they have to offer. And it still impresses to witness the amount of lenses, equipment and other accessories available for Nikon's digital SLR and compact cameras. Whether it concerns standard photography or professional photography; Nikon offer the solution. Although many of us thought it was about time for Nikon to announce a new professional SLR camera; during the PMA 2007 emphasis had been placed on the Nikon Coolpix compact camera and a new digital SLR for the entry-level consumer.

PMA 2009 - The digital SLR camera market is booming. Compared to last year the DSLR camera sales increased with impressive numbers and it seems the digital SLR camera has become a mass consumer product. New entry level D-SLR cameras with 6 Megapixels surprisingly were welcomed very well by the amateur photographer and it seems that within this segment of the digital camera market the resolution range of 6 - 10 Megapixel fulfils the need of the amateur photographer. Without lenses the digital SLR camera would not be complete and it is for that reason we see a huge number of digital SLR lens introductions appear this year. There are multiple camera manufacturers offering their best own brand solution for its DSLR camera, but there are even more specialized lens manufacturers who offer an impressive number of lens solutions too. Keep your eye on the digital SLR lens section of this PMA 2009 report for the latest introductions!
