PMA 2010 Report

Samsung promised to come with big news before the start of the PMA, and indeed, with the announcement of the Samsung NX camera, Samsung is likely to become the highlight of the event. This information reached me under NDA before I left for the PMA, and Samsung was first on my list to contact during the PMA show. It was therefore rather disappointing when I finally reached the Samsung booth only to find out I had better things to do then waste my time on a new Samsung camera of which nothing was known yet at all. Showcased behind glass, in different colors and lenses, all we could do was watch something called the Samsung NX from a distance.

Samsung NX hybrid camera concept
The way Samsung handles the presentation of this new concept is highly questionable. You'd think they might benefit from a viewpoint of the media about this new concept. But no, time and again I see disappointed reporters leave the Samsung booth straight away, to head for the next brand. Soon, the word 'Bubble' spreads, or in other words: everything is still way up in the air. Naturally, Samsung will have to come up with a Samsung NX model sooner or later, but the presentation at the PMA was not good at all.

More questions than answers are what are left, however; I'm done here and I wish Samsung the best of luck. The rest of the Samsung compact camera series was introduced during the CES in January and in the time prior to the start of the PMA Show, both held in Las Vegas. Also here, I have to say that if you take a good look from a worldwide helicopter view at the Samsung introductions; it's a jumble, a disarray of models. One country introduces camera model A in week 1, after which the next country introduces camera model B and next, it turns out that these models are exactly the same Samsung cameras. There seems hardly any uniformity in the communication of Samsung, if any at all. I often get the feeling that the one hand does not know what's in the other. Perhaps the launch of the recently founded Samsung Camera Division will lead to more clarity and transparency.

Samsung camcorder with SSD
In addition to digital cameras, Samsung also shows that camcorders seem to become a gradually more important part of their portfolio. We witnessed the world's first camcorder with SSD as storage medium being demonstrated by Samsung. This is a very interesting development, however, also a very pricy alternative for Flash memory at this moment.

The PMA show, or Photo Marketing Association, continues its yearly tradition of maintaining a network of photo imaging as well as the experience and know-how of the industry. The PMA represents 20,000 members from over 100 countries, who are all active within the imaging industry. As a reflection of the changes in the market, the PMA organization has also changed and has become more diverse. Nowadays, the member group consists of representatives coming from photo retail, manufacturers, commercial photo labs, professional sports and news photography, in addition to small album print suppliers and photo processing centers. The PMA 2012 Trade show focuses on an industry which is heavily affected by the unstable situation of the global financial economy. However, whether the latter will also stand in the way of the innovation and product introductions, remains to be revealed by the PMA International Convention & Trade Show in Anaheim Convention Center (California, US).
