PMA 2018 Report
The beginning of a year always starts with several highly interesting events in which imaging plays a main role. The CES in Las Vegas has only just closed its doors, but there is much more coming up; in February there's the Mobile World Congress in which mobile imaging seems to gradually become more important, and in March it's the PMA 2009 show again in Las Vegas. These are hectic times in which all the manufacturers introduce their new series of DSLR cameras, compact cameras, phones, lenses and other accessories for the following season. The majority of the cameras are introduced in January & February, yet luckily the upcoming PMA show has more than enough to offer and will show several very interesting cameras.

PMA 2009 Show report live from Las Vegas
This year will be a tough year for the entire industry. A year in which expectations will have to be adjusted and repositioning is required. The timing seems awful for a large number of manufacturers that are already fighting for their right to exist in the current market. The recent CES show already encountered the effects of the world-wide financial crisis; according to the latest news, it attracted approximately 25-30% less visitors and exhibitioners. Whether this will also be the case for the PMA Imaging Convention and Trade show 2009, remains to be seen.
CIPA Camera & Imaging Products Association
Last year's figures clearly showed a growth in product numbers and for the first time since CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) started keeping statistics, the number surpassed the 100 million pieces boundary. This is an increase of 19.3% compared to 2007. The digital SLR, including matching accessories, is the main reason for this growth. The demand for lenses, for example, has increased hugely with 25.1%. Yet for this year, CIPA predicts limited growth and even a decrease of 0.7% for the entire product range.
Digital SLR cameras at PMA 2009 in Las Vegas
The digital SLR will be the most important product in 2009 with which camera manufacturers will be able to increase growth and turnover. Forecast is a growth of digital SLR cameras with 660,000 pieces to a total of 10,349,000 which is an increase of 6.8%. Related products, optional accessories such as lenses, will increase equally with approximately 6.1%. If you compare these figures to the expected decrease of 1.3% (1,450,000 pieces) for compact cameras, you will be able to understand the importance of the DSLR for now and in the future.
PMA 2009 - Micro Four Thirds system cameras
From these numbers we can tell how important 2009 is going to be for corporations that manufacture digital SLR cameras. And hopes are high for the new generation of Micro Four Thirds system cameras of Olympus and Panasonic. In our opinion, we think it is exactly this innovative approach; developing a new camera concept that will keep the focus on high quality photography. We certainly admire Olympus and Panasonic for the difficult yet highly appreciated path they follow. Other manufactures will of course try their utmost too, however; the ability of claiming a large market share is no longer a certainty. We will soon undoubtedly start noticing huge shifts in market shares. Perhaps at the PMA 2009 things will become clear and we will see which brand is able to attract full attention.
