PMA 2010 Report
During the Photokina, Nikon introduced a new wide aperture fixed-focal length lens, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens. This lens has a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 respectively for a bright viewfinder experience, beautiful background blur with shallow depth of field. Due to its fixed focal length, the Nikon 50mm lens is considered as standard lens for the FX DSLR such as the Nikon D3x, D3, and D700. If the Nikon 50mm is mounted on a DX DLSR such as the Nikon D300, D90, D60, or D40x, the picture angle reaches 75mm, thanks to the 1.5x focal length multiplier on DX DSLR cameras. Both this Nikon lens and the Nikon D3x became available in December, so we decided to take the pair along on one of our strolls.

These first test shots are only a fraction of the actual number of test pictures that are usually taken during a camera test. In addition to the standard test in practice of the DSLR and the lens, both products were also tested extensively in the DIWA Lab. This combination of lab tests and the testing in practice, results in a final conclusion which we will soon publish in a Nikon D3x review.

In addition to high optical performance, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens comes with several striking features. The Nikon 50mm lens has a silent, fast and accurate focus without movement of the extended element or filter mount. The length of the lens does not extend, nor does it decrease. This is very convenient for portrait photographers or for Nikon SB-R200 users. The aperture with nine blades provides a natural looking blur.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G sample photos were taken with a full production lens which means that this lens is equal to the model that the consumer can expect to purchase. Our DIWA camera test lab will soon test the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens under laboratory circumstances from a technical viewpoint. Take a look at our full Las Vegas photo gallery !
