For Sigma, the latest Photokina has been an important event. Not only for them being a lens manufacturer but also a camera manufacturer. At that time Sigma introduced the Sigma SD14, a digital SLR camera based on the deviated Foveon X3 image sensor. Besides that Sigma introduced the DP1 digital compact camera that has been equipped with the Foveon image sensor. Not one of these cameras had reached the final stage then and the availability of the Sigma SD14 was even postponed. But at the PMA 2007 Sigma announced the availability of the Sigma SD14 digital SLR and the first results are starting to appear here and there on a users forum and on different web sites of the true Sigma lovers.

Sigma DP1 Digital Camera
Sigma maintain a very close bond with their users, something that is unique and something Sigma is praised for. The experiences and remarks of their users are being studied and if possible applied in order to improve the product, excellent teamwork! Besides the availability of the SD14, the Sigma DP1 is slowly but surely coming in sight. It is a very compact camera equipped with a Foveon image sensor. Mainly the serious photographer can't wait for the Sigma DP1 to finally get introduced. It is not a camera for the mass, but it will have to find its spot like before it Konica, Contax and Leica cameras used to do in the analogue era.

Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 APO EX DG lens
Besides these two incredibly special digital cameras, Sigma drew the attention by introducing a number of new lenses. The most remarkable one is the enormously impressive Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 APO EX DG lens. I could not resist taking the Sigma SD14 equipped with this lens in my hands to experience the feeling of setting out with such a tool. You are well aware of the 15 kilos of weight and you don't need a lot of fantasy to imagine what kind of tripod this lens requires. Very impressive!

PMA 2009 - The digital SLR camera market is booming. Compared to last year the DSLR camera sales increased with impressive numbers and it seems the digital SLR camera has become a mass consumer product. New entry level D-SLR cameras with 6 Megapixels surprisingly were welcomed very well by the amateur photographer and it seems that within this segment of the digital camera market the resolution range of 6 - 10 Megapixel fulfils the need of the amateur photographer. Without lenses the digital SLR camera would not be complete and it is for that reason we see a huge number of digital SLR lens introductions appear this year. There are multiple camera manufacturers offering their best own brand solution for its DSLR camera, but there are even more specialized lens manufacturers who offer an impressive number of lens solutions too. Keep your eye on the digital SLR lens section of this PMA 2009 report for the latest introductions!
